For such a small psalm it sure packs a lot of punch, a mere 11 verses of which some offer great encouragement in troubling times. Take for instance the opening 3 verses, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in the time of trouble.
Therefore we will not fear.
Though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.
Though its waters roar and be troubled. Though its mountains shake "
Its sounds like a frightening experience, along the lines of what has happened in the northern parts of Japan. The author encourages the reader not to fear in amongst all this turmoil !!! Which begs the question, where does he get his confidence from? May I suggest that the closing verse (11) is written from personal experience,
"The Lord of Hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge" The sons of Korah don't just claim God can be trusted around natural disasters but that He is dependable even in amongst man made calamity. Verse 9 states it this way "He makes wars cease to the end of the earth, He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two, He burns the chariots in the fire", which is comforting for those who are increasingly worried over the spread of upheaval and violence across the Middle East and northern Africa.
How are we coping with what has been happening all around us?
Fearful?
Troubled?
Let me leave you with verse 10 of Psalm 46;
"Be still and know that I Am God"
