The rioting and thuggery we have seen in England over the last few days are certainly unsettling Also as certain would be the prayers of many around Britain (and beyond) for the intervention of God onto the streets of these troubled cities People are dead, wounded and in jail Much has been said of the reasons for the upheaval What I haven’t heard said is the need to return to the God of the founding fathers Scripture tells us righteousness exalts a nation (Proverbs 14 v34) It was said once the sun never set on the British Empire, and wherever the British pioneer went in those days so too the gospel of Jesus Christ But when was the last time this occurred? Is Britain known for this today? The unfolding man made calamity on those city streets has its roots deeply entrenched in the undermining of Christian values (love thy neighbor, do unto others, tolerance, fair mindedness, helping the weak, respect for human life) and core beliefs in the God who has shown Himself to us through the life of His only Son Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1 v2) and until England (and all other western democracies) come to grips with this it is purely tinkering around the edges Let me put it even plainer Democracy cannot on its own survive unless its foundations are firmly grounded in Christ-ianity Christianity will outlive democracy but democracy as we know it will not outlive Christianity Let’s keep in prayer those who have lost their businesses, loved ones and the needed sense of security, praying in particular for the voices of reason to be heard and for more and more volunteers to flood the streets in an act of good will as first experienced here in Brisbane after the floods We live in troubling times Psalm 23 can be of help “The Lord is my Shepherd He leads me beside still waters He restores my soul….
